2010 -2011 Concert Season: OUT the DOOR

First event: The Sept. 4 annual DAY OF SIGHT-READING

At Zion Lutheran Church, 5201 Park Ave in the Piedmont area of Oakland, is open to any and all intermediate recorder players; it is how AROW begins a new repertory.

If any you live around the Greater S.F. Bay Area, you are invited to attend this day-long event. It will put you in the middle of the sound and kind of music a recorder orchestra can play.

Download a registration form?

Or contact Dir. Richard Geisler to receive a registration form by mail: richgeis@oro.net.

The program is titled “OUT THE DOOR.” Pieces from it will be selected for sightreading on Sept. 4.

You will be joining others to play music that speaks of the human moods, emotions and experiences that can happen when we step outside the boxes we call our lives... and into the Great Outdoors.

The American Recorder Orchestra of the West embarks on a voyage to the Cradle of Western Art. It’s a pleasure cruise to Italy in which the orchestra performs Viva Italia!, a program of the many moods and styles of the Italian genius for wonderful music.

Viva Italia! features renaissance madrigals by Caccini, Donato, Gesualdo, Vecchi and Monteverdi, Palestrina’s heavenly polyphony from the high Renaissance, early baroque canzonas by Gabrieli and Frescobaldi, Vivaldi’s ever popular 18th century Double Trumpet Concerto, and arias from 19th century operas by Donizetti and Verdi.

There is more to be heard from the music of the Italian folk: a medley of well known “street songs” and another of Tarantellas whipped into a passionate frenzy. And there is music from our modern age by Respighi who honors Italy’s musical past in a suite of beautiful melodies.

Ensemble AROW has officially kicked off the 2007-2008 season with a bang.

The Day of Sightreading workshop on Saturday, September 8th, was an intense rehearsal debut, allowing AROW members (and visiting players) to hear for the first time what the exciting Fancy Free repertoire sounds like coming from a real orchestra.

The AROW members are looking forward to another season of rehearsing, reviewing, refining, and reveling in this novel and spirited program so that they can present to you a series of concerts throughout the Northern California region in 2008.

Stay tuned for more details about concerts dates, times, and locations.

What's happening

Ensemble AROW kicked off its 2006/07 season in September by throwing open the doors and inviting adventurous recorder players to "A DAY OF SIGHT READING", a workshop to inaugurate a new repertoire, "THE TEUTONIC SPIRIT... with a touch of Italian & French esprit".. Those who walked through the doors came with a perky attitude and a "Let's go!" spirit. What they experienced under the leadership of directors Richard Geisler and Greta Hryciw was an intense, challenging, full-of-fun immersion into the German Genius... sprinkled with Italian & French madrigals and operatic tunes.

The Arrow and the Song

I shot an arrow into the air, It fell to earth, I knew not where; For, so swiftly it flew, the sight Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air, It fell to earth, I knew not where; For who has sight so keen and strong, That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.
